Advancing or moving upward in a company’s organizational structure is most commonly referred to as climbing the corporate ladder. We visualize it as progressing from entry-level positions to higher levels of authority, responsibility, and compensation by acquiring relevant skills, experience, and connections — one rung of the ladder at a time. The gap between the rungs seems well defined with a fixed scope. However, the reality is far more complex than this simplistic analogy suggests.
You have to be highly skillful, observant, action oriented, and focused to get to success. Your ability of strategic maneuvering and adaptation to changing circumstances is of utmost importance to navigate the dynamics of the workplace. You have to take initiatives, learn continuously, jump in where help is needed, change context quickly, and play roles with different shapes and sizes.
Sometimes you have to squeeze into tight-knit teams, and at other times, lead a significant change(a piece of new shape) and fit the team around it. You have to embrace the uncertainty of what lies ahead and keep adapting swiftly and skillfully.
This dynamic and ever-changing landscape reminds me of a game of Tetris, which involves:
1 capturing the falling blocks of different sizes and shapes, fitting those by rotating
2 completing horizontal lines with no gaps of any sort
3 earning higher scores for higher speed
4 getting better at higher speed as the game progresses
5 ending the game at the top of the playing field
So, Strive to be a champion of Tetris, my friends! And, stay in the game for long term success!!
